What are Exosomes, and How Do They Work?
Exosomes are tiny vesicles secreted by various cells in the body, playing a crucial role in intercellular communication. They are rich in proteins, nucleic acids, growth factors, and other bioactive molecules.
As we age, not only does the functional ability of cells deteriorate, but so does the ground substance they reside in, along with the communicative particles that enable cohesive functioning. These same factors also determine how well the skin recovers from insults such as sun damage and other environmental aggressors.
To address the deterioration of the ground substance, we use hyaluronic acid-based injectables like Skinvive, skin boosters, and Profhilo. For overall tissue regeneration, treatments such as GFC, PRP, and stem cells work wonderfully, while exosomes are highly effective in enhancing cellular communication.
When focusing on biostimulation—stimulating collagen, elastin, and the ground substance, as well as supporting micro-blood vessels in the area for tissue regeneration—exosomes play a crucial role in improving communication between cells, ensuring optimal results.
With low immunogenecity, excellent biocompatibility, targetting specificity, and strong tissue penetration, exosomes are ideal for addressing various skin and hair conditions.
Exosomes are believed to stimulate hair follicles, potentially improving hair density and reducing hair loss by encouraging healthier hair growth cycles.
What is the procedure like?
Exosomes can be applied to the skin or scalp using various methods, tailored to the treatment plan designed by Dr. Rashmi Shetty. Common application techniques include:
Microneedling:
Exosomes are applied topically and penetrate more effectively through the microchannels created by microneedling devices, such as handheld dermarollers or machine-based systems. This method is commonly used for facial rejuvenation, scar remodeling, and hair follicle stimulation.
What Can I Expect?
Exosome therapy offers multiple benefits, including:
– Scar remodeling
– Wound repair
– Inhibition of hyperpigmentation
– Hair restoration
– Sun damage repair
– Improved elasticity and firmness
– Anti-aging effects
When Will I See Results?
Visible improvements are generally noticeable within 3–6 months after completing a minimum of 3–4 sessions.
How Long Do the Results Last?
The duration of results varies depending on the individual, the specific concerns, and the treated area (skin or hair). Dr. Rashmi Shetty will set realistic expectations during your consultation and may recommend combining treatments to achieve the best outcomes for your skin goals.
Are There Any Risks?
A word of caution: Exosome therapy is relatively new in the field and does not currently have FDA approval as an injectable treatment. Additionally, guidelines for its application are not yet stringent. Therefore, it is crucial to choose a qualified and reputable provider who uses high-quality products from trusted sources.
Exosome therapy generally involves minimal downtime, making it a convenient option. However, mild side effects such as temporary redness, swelling, or bruising may occur. Most patients can resume their regular activities shortly after treatment.
