Postpartum Hair Loss: Tips for Relief

There is no need to panic if you have been experiencing excessive hair shedding after having your baby.

Below are a few things that new mothers need to know about postpartum hair loss.

What leads to postpartum or post-pregnancy hair fall?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “New moms usually observe significant hair loss a few months after having a baby. This is normal. Falling estrogen levels could be causing the excessive shedding.”

Dr. Rashmi Shetty tells us a few reasons you may be experiencing postpartum hair fall.

  1. A drop in hormones post- pregnancy
  2. Neglected nutritional needs
  3. Hormonal fluctuations
  4. Reduction in blood circulation
  5. Lifestyle habits

One such lifestyle habit prevalent in India is the tradition of hot showers for new mums. Dr Shetty advises against doing it.

If the excessive hair shedding bothers you, below are a few practical yet simple tips from board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Rashmi Shetty, that can help.

Dealing with Postpartum Hair Loss

This is usually a tricky period because you are exhausted with the baby; the last thing you would do is think of yourself. If you get some time, you rather sleep than eat. At the same time, you are dying to get back to your old jeans, and weight loss is already on your mind.

  1. Don’t think of weight loss initially. Concentrate on nutritious food; however, don’t overdo the calories. Find the right balance but ensure you’re getting the nutrition you require.
  2. Ghee, colored fruits, colored vegetables, and nuts are a few things I wouldn’t miss.
  3. Don’t forget to add the right supplements to your nutritious meals, fill the gaps, and deal with all the stress your body has gone through. The right Supplements can help bring you back to your optimum wellbeing.
  4. Oiling is a helpful thing to do but ensure you stay away from a harsh massage. Your hair will now get into a shedding phase due to all the good hormones diving down after the baby is born. No need to panic; this phase will pass.
  5. Keep the scalp clean. It is essential to keep the scalp clean. However, Dr. Rashmi Shetty warns us against using excessively hot water while showering. Make sure you dilute your shampoo, and a single round of shampoo is enough.
  6. Post shampoo, you can use a protein hair mask to strengthen the strands.
  7. This is not the time for harsh chemical treatment or coloring / straightening the hair. Allow the hair time to get back. Take time to use suitable serums/hair masks and supplements.
  8. Protect your hair from the sun with umbrellas and sun protection hair serum now readily available in the market.
  9. Avoid rubbing your wet hair with a towel. Instead, wrap it in a muslin (not Turkish) towel at the nape of your neck.

Ra Anagen made using essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients helps repair, rebuild, and replenish every cell in your body.

How does that help, you ask?

Here are few benefits of using Anagen:

– reduced hair fall

– improved hair growth

– improved hair quality

– reduced acne

– improved skin texture

– stronger nails

– reduced chipping of nails

Will cutting your hair help reduce hair fall?

Dr. Rashmi Shetty says, “No, don’t lose your beautiful hair. Cutting your hair does not reduce hair fall. It may appear that the hair loss has reduced, but no, it does not help.”

If your hair does not get normal after one year, you may want to consult a dermatologist, to rule out other causes. An accurate diagnosis is essential to figure out the root cause and design the treatment protocol.
