Angle Of Jaw

“Queen Nefertiti, an ancient, beautiful Egyptian queen is known for her strong, well-defined jawline.”

A mother is said to have blessed her daughter, “ May

you fall in love with a man with good music taste and a jawline stronger than your wi-fi.

Most models, beauty ideals that one sees in fashion magazines such as Vogue and Cosmopolitan are seen having a very crisp jawline with an attractive/well-defined chin. Celebrities and influencers are seen flaunting their jawlines, making it even more desirable.

A beautiful face is usually defined with some constant likes, and one such is a sharp jawline; male or female does not matter. A sharp jawline is a feature aesthetically admired across ages. However, a male jawline is sharper and the entire mandible ( the bone that makes the jaw ) is bigger, the angle of the jaw flared or square. A study published in the Nature Communications journal found that men with high levels of testosterone hormones have stronger immune systems and tend to have more masculine facial features such as a strong jawline, a highly desirable physical trait.

Whereas in a lady, it is observed that the most attractive jaws are the ones that are slightly tucked in. Some people prefer to have an oval face, in which case the jaw is further tucked in. Whether it is an oval, V-shaped or square jawline, the sharpness of the jaw is always admired.

The angle of the jaw is one of the cornerstones of the face which gives the framework to the lower face along with the projection of the chin defines the beauty of not just the lower face but also the neck.

What are the structures that contribute to the jawline?

  • Bone

The ideal mandibular angle and the chin are mainly dependent on the boney framework, the mandible. The bone is then wrapped over by other soft tissue like muscle, fat, salivary gland, skin etc. each of these structures can contribute to the shape of the jawline and the angle. But let us start with talking about the bone. One can be born with a perfectly ideal jaw structure, but some may be born with a small jaw bone, chin which is small and set back in protrusion, further

Bone resorbs as one age making it smaller.

Fillers or volume enhancers can take care of this beautifully. At RA, Dr Rashmi Shetty designs the jaw keeping in mind the likes, the rest of the facial esthetics and the sex of the patient.

  • Muscles

One of the muscles that help in chewing food called masseter, is wrapped around the angle of the jaw and gives it the structure and shape. Chewing gum, or teeth clenching, grinding at night may make this muscle bulky as one age. This may add bulk to the area and blunt the jaw angle.

Botulinum protein is the best magic result, but pls be careful in seeking expert hands as an injection in this area can affect the smile. Along with the muscle of the jaw, neck muscles such as platysma change with age leading to loss of face neck definition and turkey neck appearance that can be treated with muscle relaxant injectables.

  • Salivary glands

The gland that makes saliva, the parotid gland is located on each side of the jaw in front of the ear. If the glands become enlarged, the face can seem bottom-heavy. They tend to drop over time and show a bulge in the upper neck. Again a few shots of the botulinum protein will help shrink the gland. You do not have to worry. There are other salivary glands to keep your mouth wet. And one does not stop the gland from fully functioning. The aim is to only reduce the bulk.

  • Fat

Fat build-up under the chin can be particularly annoying. Even if a person tends to lose weight, the fat under the chin is hard to disappear. With age, this fat can sag. Removal of this fat creates a sharper more attractive jawline. There are surgical ways, but equally good non-surgical energy-based devices such as HIFU = Ultherapy, radiofrequency etc to reduce the fat under the skin and tighten and lift the skin. Also, there are options for fat devolving injections.

How can you get a great jawline contour?

Since there are so many structures and layers that

contribute to a great jawline, Dr. Rashmi Shetty first thoroughly examines to find out which layer is contributing to the shape of your jawline specifically and the angle of the jaw where the enhancement is required.

1. If it is only the masseter muscle that is making it look bulky, the solution is very simple and can be achieved with a simple protein botulinum A injection. Within a week or three weeks, you can see good results. It will make the jawline look slimmer and more defined. In addition, this relieves migraines, chronic headaches and jaw grinding. Injectable treatments, such as dermal fillers and botox can create dramatic results on the jawline, giving you a more youthful facial profile.

2. If it is fat, a quite common scenario, there are fat dissolving injections or energy-based devices such as ultherapy, radiofrequency, cryofrequency depending on what suits best.

3. If it is a structural deficient, then we use fillers. This truly is an expert’s job as getting the aesthetics right is very important. It is literally like sculpting the face.

4. If it is the salivary gland issue, then protein botulinum A injected here will help shape the angle of the jaw.

Most important to note here is that the skin wraps all the above structures. Hence it is critical to get the skin tightening and lifting right.

There are many devices out that that use heat energy to shrink the skin and make it tighter. Some energy devices such as ultherapy transmit energy from the skin surface. Radiofrequency energy (RF) can be combined with micro-needling to stimulate healthier skin and tighten soft tissue.

It is done with thermage, ultrasound, radiofrequency or other multipolar devices.

A well-defined and sharp jawline is sort for by most women and men. It is associated with a youthful appearance. A sagging jawline is related to an ageing face. A recent study by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery found that 74 per cent of the people surveyed were bothered by excess fat around the chin and neck. It is the scaffolding for the entire face; ensuring its firmness can help the skin remain lifted for longer.
